What Is Chronological Age?
Chronological age is your exact biological age — measured from the precise date you were born to today, expressed in years, months and days. It is the most accurate way to measure how long a person has been alive.
Unlike simply saying "I am 25 years old," chronological age gives the complete picture: for example, 25 years, 4 months and 12 days. This precision is essential in medical, educational and developmental assessments.
Example: May 5, 2026 − March 15, 2006 = 20 years, 1 month, 20 days
The term is widely used in speech therapy, pediatric assessments, educational testing (Pearson), medical records, and psychological evaluations where exact age matters greatly.
How to Calculate Chronological Age
Follow these steps to calculate chronological age manually — or simply use our free calculator above for instant results:
- Note the Date of Birth Write down the full date of birth: day, month and year. Example: March 15, 2006.
- Choose a Reference Date This is usually today's date. For assessments it may be a specific test date. Example: May 5, 2026.
- Subtract the Years 2026 − 2006 = 20 years. Then check if the birthday has passed yet in 2026.
- Subtract the Months May (5) − March (3) = 2 months. If the result is negative, borrow a year.
- Subtract the Days 5 − 15 = negative, so borrow one month. Final result: 20 years, 1 month, 20 days.
- Account for Leap Years If the date range includes February 29 in a leap year, add that extra day to total days.
