The Cat-to-Human Age Formula
The standard feline aging formula, as recommended by most veterinary associations, works like this:
- First year of a cat's life ≈ 15 human years
- Second year of a cat's life ≈ 9 additional human years (total: 24)
- Each year from age 3 onward ≈ 4 additional human years
So a 5-year-old cat would be approximately 36 in human years: 15 + 9 + (3 × 4) = 36. Our calculator then applies breed-specific and weight-based adjustments for a more accurate conversion.
Does Cat Breed Affect Human Age Conversion?
Yes — significantly. Larger breeds like the Maine Coon and Ragdoll tend to have shorter average lifespans than smaller breeds, meaning they effectively "age faster" relative to their total lifespan.
